An estimated 50 percent of Americans don’t visit the dentist because of fear. Without proper treatment, your appearance and oral health can suffer. Sedation dentistry allows nervous patients to receive the dental care they need and the gorgeous smiles they deserve.

Several types of sedation options exist. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is inhaled through a mask placed over the nose, which creates a feeling of peacefulness. Once the dentist discontinues the gas, any side effects will immediately disappear.

With oral conscious sedation, patients take one dose of anti-anxiety medication about an hour before the appointment. Because the sedating effects can linger for up to 12 hours, a responsible adult will need to take you to and from the visit. The dentist and support team will monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure. Some dentists also offer IV sedation, where the medicine is administered intravenously.

Think about these facts when you consider dental sedation:

•	Sedation dentistry can effectively relieve the fear many people feel about dental treatment.
•	Oral conscious sedation can help individuals who are scared of needles or dislike the sights and smells in a dental office.
•	With oral conscious sedation, your dentist can perform several extensive procedures in one visit, which minimizes the disruption to your schedule.
•	Generally, most people respond well to oral conscious sedation, even patients who have trouble getting numb.
•	In many cases, sedation dentistry makes the experience more pleasant for those with a strong gag reflex, individuals with physical limitations, and those with high levels of apprehension about having dental procedures performed.

Though most people don’t love visiting the dentist, some individuals experience fear and stress about their appointments. In fact, approximately 40 million Americans avoid dental visits because of anxiety. Without proper care, your appearance and oral health can decline. Modern advances allow dentist to keep their patients relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment.

These hints may help you feel at ease during your appointment:

Choose the right dentist
You will automatically feel better about your appointments when you find a dentist that listens to your fears and validates your feelings. As you consider practices, talk with the support staff as well so that you get a sense of the whole team.

Be prepared
Before treatment, meet with the dentist so that he or she can explain the procedure in detail. Make sure to ask any questions you have until you feel comfortable about the treatment. The night before your appointment, get a good night’s sleep so that you will feel well-rested.

Communicate your concerns
If certain things bother you, like the noise of the drill or needles, tell the dentist in advance. Establish a signal you can use during the procedure to let the team know that you are uncomfortable.

Ask about sedation dentistry
Because dentists understand that many people feel nervous about dental visits, many practices offer sedation options such as nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or a combination of the two. Talk with your dentist to find out what is available and which option would be best for you.

Thin plastic coatings that protect against decay, dental sealants are typically applied to back teeth and molars. Although pediatric dentists frequently recommend dental sealants for their young patients, some adults may benefit from these coverings as well. If you or your children are prone to cavities, talk with your dentist about the benefits of sealants.

How does the dentist place sealants?
If you decide on sealants, the application process is simple. First, your dentist will clean and dry the teeth involved. Next, the dentist will brush the mixture onto the teeth. Often, your doctor will use a curing light to harden the plastic material.

Will anyone notice the sealants?
At first, you may feel the sealants with your tongue, which can happen anytime you have something new in your mouth. Because they are clear, most people won’t even notice that you have sealants.

Are sealants permanent?
Usually, the sealants will last about 5 to 10 years. During your routine visits, the dentist can check the sealants to make sure they are in good condition, and when needed, schedule an appointment to have damaged sealants replaced.

Why are sealants better than fillings?
Preventing decay is always better than repairing cavities in your teeth. Sealants can help prevent cavities before they compromise your amazing smile.

Are sealants an alternative to fluoride?
Although sealants provide a safeguard for tooth surfaces, they do not offer the minerals and necessary elements that found in fluoride, which helps protect the whole tooth structure.

Though most people don’t enjoy planning a trip to the dentist, it’s not always a barrel of fun for your provider if you neglect your smile. People don’t realize that they can take steps to improve their dental health and make their visits more pleasant. Consider these useful insights as you prepare for your next appointment.

Make sure to brush enough
If you don’t brush for twice a day for at least two minutes, you are leaving plaque and bacteria on your teeth, which could create oral health problems.

Oral cancer is deadly
Many times, people don’t notice warning signs of oral cancer, like sores or unusual bumps in their mouths. Because it is often caught at later stages, oral cancer kills more people than cervical cancer, thyroid cancer, and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Make sure to report anything out of the ordinary to your dentist right away.

Exercise can impact your dental health
Working out is great for staying in shape and promoting a healthy lifestyle, but you need to understand how it affects your mouth. Rigorous exercise can lead to dehydration and limit the production of saliva, which can increase cavities and bacterial accumulation.

Tooth decay isn’t just caused by sugar
Getting rid of sweet treats isn’t enough to prevent cavities. Eating a selection of healthy foods like low-fat dairy, whole grains, fruits, and vegetable will significantly reduce your risk of decay.

Keep an eye on your tongue
Often, you can glean information about your overall health from your tongue. Redness on the tip of the tongue may indicate a thyroid defect or heart problem. A tongue with yellowish-green coloring can signal liver or gallbladder problems, whereas a grayish-brown tint usually means there is an issue with digestion

When you don’t have a full smile, your self-esteem and oral health decline. Implant restorations offer a solid solution for patients who have lost teeth. Designed to look and feel like your natural teeth, dental implants will rejuvenate an incomplete smile. Dental implants allow you to eat the foods you love, speak clearly, and laugh with confidence.

Constructed from biocompatible titanium, a dental implant is a small metal post surgically inserted into your jaw bone. The implant creates an artificial tooth root. Eventually, a permanent crown is placed on the post, restoring the function and appearance of your smile.

Although you can replace missing teeth with dentures or crown and bridgework, dental implants offer several advantages, including:

•	Durability
•	Longevity
•	Natural Appearance
•	Stability

Before suggesting dental implants, your dentist will evaluate your mouth and oral health to make sure you are a good candidate for implants. If you don’t have sufficient bone structure to support the implants, your dentist may suggest a bone graft. In most cases, dental implants have a 95 to 98 percent success rate.

With implant therapy, an oral surgeon or prosthodontist will position one metal post in each empty socket. Implants can replace one or more missing teeth. Once your mouth heals and bone fuses with the biocompatible post, your dentist will attach a lifelike prosthetic crown. Care for the implants as you would your natural teeth, brushing twice daily, flossing frequently, and visiting the dentist for routine checkups.

When you have a cavity, your dentist will remove the decay and repair the remaining tooth structure. Typically, a dental filling is the choice for restoring your smile. Your dentist has two options: an amalgam or composite filling. Learn more about filling basics so that you can make an informed decision about your oral health.

Amalgam Fillings
Metal fillings have been used for years to fix a tooth with that has a cavity. Less expensive than the composite fillings, amalgams offer durability, especially for back teeth. Mercury is a component of amalgam fillings, however, and questions have arisen about whether these fillings can contribute to mercury overexposure. Amalgam fillings also tend to look dark or gray with time, which can detract from your smile’s appearance. Wear and tear can cause amalgams to crack or leak, producing new decay in and around the damaged filling.

Composite Fillings
Initially, composite fillings were used for individuals who worried about the impact of metal fillings on their white smiles. Because the mercury in amalgam fillings has come under fire for contributing to potential health issues, many dentists have begun using only composite fillings. In fact, all-white fillings are becoming the standard in dental care.

Created to match your natural tooth coloring, composite fillings provide additional benefits as well. These restorations allow your dentist to perform a more conservative repair and leave more healthy tooth structure in place. Because all-white fillings bond to the tooth, they won’t change shape or leak over time. Many people have started replacing amalgam fillings with composite alternatives.

Approximately 40 million Americans avoid dental visits because of fear; however, routine exams protect your oral health. Without treatment, you could develop problems like tooth decay, gum, disease, and oral cancer. Oral health can also impact overall wellness, contributing to bigger issues such as diabetes complications, increased risk of stroke, Alzheimer’s, and pre-term births.

Minimize your fears by:

Choosing the right dentist
When you are looking for a provider, schedule consultation appointments with those on your list so that you can talk with the candidates and get a feel for their personalities. Having a dentist that you like and trust will go a long way toward making you feel better about visiting the office regularly.

Sharing your concerns
If you don’t let the dentist know how you feel, your doctor can’t help you. Be honest about your feelings and allow your dentist the chance to assuage some of your fears by answering questions and providing reassurance.

Finding helpful distractions
Many dental practices offer headphones, DVDs, and special glasses to help patients feel comfortable during their treatments. If your dentist doesn’t have these options, bring your iPod and listen to your own musical selections.

Considering sedation
Thanks to dental advances, dentists have a variety of options to keep patients relaxed during treatment. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, creates feelings of warmth and only lasts as long as you breathe in the gas. Oral conscious sedation combines nitrous oxide and a dose of anti-anxiety medication to provide a state of total peacefulness. For patients with high levels of fear, those with a strong gag reflex, and anyone who requires multiple procedures at one time, IV sedation offers the deepest level of relaxation.

When you have a cavity, your dentist will have to remove the decay and repair the tooth with a filling. For years, the only option for tooth restorations was amalgam, or metal, fillings. These fillings stabilized the tooth and were relatively inexpensive and easy for dental practitioners to use. Currently, many dentists have started choosing composite fillings instead.

Amalgam fillings contain several different metals, but they are over 50 percent mercury, a potentially toxic material. Normal chewing and grinding can release some amount of the chemical into your system. Overexposure to mercury can lead to problems such as kidney dysfunction, neurological impairment, birth defects, and other serious issues. The FDA still considers amalgam fillings a safe option for tooth repair.

Tooth-colored fillings offer several advantages to amalgam fillings. With metal-free fillings, your dentist can remove less of the healthy tooth structure, which protects the tooth’s strength. All-white restorations create an natural-looking repair whereas amalgams turn dark over time and then stand out in your mostly white smile. Though metal fillings can leak or crack from normal wear and tear, all-white fillings bond to the tooth and form a solid surface.

Usually, the dentist can fill your cavity in one appointment. The doctor will remove the decayed area and clean the remaining tooth surface. Then, he or she will tint the composite material and fill in the tooth. A curing light will harden the new filling, and the dentist will polish the tooth to finish the process.

Fluoride strengthens teeth and protects against tooth decay, but too much fluoride can cause problems. Recently, U.S. health officials released a statement recommending a reduction in fluoride levels in drinking water. This recommendation comes based on the fact that most people now get fluoride from drinking water, toothpaste, and other products. Over exposure to fluoride can result in streaks on teeth and other issues.

Since the 1950s, the U.S. has encouraged the addition of fluoride to municipal water supplies. At that time, water was the main source of fluoride. Now, fluoride is in other products, like toothpaste and bottled water. Additionally, most kids receive fluoride supplements when they visit the dentist. In many cases, young children may be getting too much fluoride.

Research indicates that approximately two of five adolescents show signs of over fluoridation. Common indicates of fluorosis include streaking and spots on the teeth. The numbers of children 12 to 15 with this condition seems to have risen, up about 18 percent since the 1980s. Although fluorosis is mostly a cosmetic issue, other concerns about fluoride have also come to light. The EPA recently released a study suggesting that high fluoride intake can result in an increased risk of brittle bones, fractures, and other bone problems.

There are some simple tips you can follow to reduce fluoride overexposure:

•	Don’t buy water or other beverages with added fluoride
•	Skip fluoride toothpaste for children under age two
•	Talk with your dentist if you have concerns about your family fluoride intake
•	Teach your kids not to swallow the toothpaste

Most people cringe at the thought of a root canal. The dread associated with this procedure often stems from a lack of understanding about the root canal itself. In most cases, patients usually feel better after root canal therapy.

Your tooth has a hard outer shell, a layer of dentin, and a soft core of nerve cells called the pulp, which supplies nutrients and blood flow to the tooth. If a tooth sustains intense trauma or develops deep decay, the pulp can die. Pressure and infection will then build inside the tooth, and you often experience severe discomfort.

To save the tooth, your dentist will probably suggest root canal therapy. During the procedure, the doctor will remove the diseased tissue, clean out the inside, and seal the tooth to prevent future issues. After a root canal, your dentist will typically place a dental crown to strengthen the tooth and improve function.

Modern anesthesia makes root canal therapy similar to any other dental procedure. Laughing gas and oral sedation allow patients to relax and feel completely peaceful while the dentist works on repairing the damaged tooth.
